Don't click-away!

Postby DerbysRam » Sat Jul 24, 2010 1:46 pm

Reading the "Daily Mail" as you would, :D I came across an item that has had an airing on the Forum recently - littering. But this has a twist, in that, yes, those with the authority and know-how will construct a successful prosecution against the low-life offenders. That is, those who drop litter in a public place.

But consider all the litter that is NOT dropped in a public place, but on YOUR door-mat. Unsolicited mail of all types; unscrupulous businesses out to profit by targeting those among us who take for granted every request for cast-off clothing and unwanted items, are always from bona-fide charities. Some of us don't bother to look at the source of these requests. These types of low life actually rob the charities we try to help.

Then all the junk mail we have to find room for in our 'blue bags.' Why can't these litter louts be prosecuted? If you have transparent panelling in your front door, one of the clearest beacons to the opportunist burglar, is junk mail and the like left on your door mat, hour after hour. Would the depositors of the junk be prepared to reimburse you if you fell victim to such a criminal? Of course not. The sources of the mail would't so much as consider they were at fault, such as our lax society's views in these issues.

One of our long-standing members, eyeballpaul, has brought this issue up a few times, both on the old and the new forums - have a look at this:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=252&p=2064#p2064

Also there is a far worse scam being perpetrated in this way on some of the most vulnerable members of society. Read this and see how this obscene scam is ruining lives whilst the government and the Post Office stand by and do little or nothing to stop it:

All despicable, as I understand it the scammers from abroad cannot be prosecuted under our laws so very difficult to stop them, but there are numerous warnings not to open emails from sources you don't know

It would be very difficult - nay impossible - to get junk mail stopped (it's actually called unaddressed social mail in Post Office parlance) as it's a big income generator for Royal Mail! :)

Hi
Thanks for responding. Just wish to apologise to Pete, if I had known That the latter part of my rant was old boots, I'd have omitted it.

Many years ago I seen to remember that there WAS a way of 'stopping' addressed junk mail, though obviously not UN-addressed social mail. One had to 'register' every 12 months. WHY - don't ask, probably the organisation deemed that you could change your mind and needed junk mail after-all.
Local authorises have a great lot to answer for, when a new tenant moves-in to a property, they let every Tom, Dick and Harry who runs a particular business know all about you. For a fee of course. I'd like to know what THAT's called.

No need for any apology mate - you're not expected to have read all 1852 topics discussed so far in the new forums ;)

It's the mailing preference service. http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/ You have to re-register every 5 years.

There's also an equivalent for telephones.

Appropriately known as 'the telephone preference service' ! :lol2:

I subscribe to that - but 'they' have a way around that, most of the calls I now receive originate from abroad where they don't have to abide by the TPS regulations. :(

What gets me is all this stuff about recycling. If anyone was serious about reducing waste, etc, they would deal with it at source. And that includes banning all the junk mail that most of us put straight in the bin. It won't happen because the post office can't afford to lose it.
And all the bloody packing that is on everything these days. These days kids get their pressies Christmas morning, but can't play with them till boxing day, because there is so much card, paper, wire, plastic, etc, etc, to get through first.
Politicians, as always, go for the easy target in this matter, ie, Joe Public, instead of dealing with the cause of the problem.
