Does anyone have a red 40w pearl bulb?

Postby Cat Lady » Mon Feb 08, 2010 4:13 pm

I have no idea where to put this...but here goes.

In my reptile vivs I use standard bayonet fitting 40w pearl bulbs. This raises the temperature if necessary without being too harsh for the snakes eyes.

However I've hit a snag. Wilkos who used to sell them for 67p inform me they're discontinued. Homebase don't stock them and I've tried the little place in the market hall which is also a no go.

Anyone got any ideas? (Or does anyone have one lying about? Odd request, I know!)

I've had a similar problem getting 40w pearl bulbs for my Mother - although not for the same reason as you!

It's due, in no small part, to the encouragement of using energy saving lights, but (as in my case) try getting a wall light shade to stop on one of those bulbs!

Anyway Ebay have some (see link at end of my post) - but just look at the prices, none of your 60p bargains! :eeek: :o

Hope this helps. :)

PS: Could you get ordinary bulbs and put some 'shades' on your snakes?! :ninja:

Just had a thought (ok it takes a while at my age!) - have you tried Johnsons Ironmongers on Chatsworth Road? Those sort of bulbs that you're after used to be used in electric fires if I remember rightly.

..... and here's another link showing what I mean - and they're cheaper than those shown in my other link. :)

Sadly, I can't use the "fire effect" ones....they still stock those in Wilkos.

It's got to be these:

And it looks like I'm going to get mightily ripped off whether I buy these or a "special" reptile bulb. Thanks for your help, though!

(Oh, do you know of anywhere that sells snake shades? ;) )

There's a picture I would love to see! How 'cool' would they look? 8-) :lol2:

For my bulbs for my fiche reader I went straight to the company who makes them online. I found 2 sources - one expensive & one cheap - same bulb! I bought a stock of cheap ones. Sorry I can't help but alsation has given you a couple of ideas.

Following hours of research on t'interweb and walking miles round the electrical shops of Sheffield, oh, o'k then, actually calling in at one shop on the way past, the best I can suggest is an orange bulb at £1.99.

Seem to remember years ago painting bulbs to use in lighting displays, don't know if you can still do this but might be something to investigate.
If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?

If you haven't got one already I saw one in Focus at the bottom of Park Rd. Not sure of the wattage though - about £1.65 for one! :o

£1.65....gone are the days of my 67p red bulbs. :( Thanks Dawn, will go and take a look. He's currently making do with a green 40w.
